The 1st “side” of the double EP, this music is defiant in the face of 21st century society, culture, and corporate power, with songs that boldly and compassionately challenge the listener to hear both message and medium. That medium draws heavily from blues, folk and rock, hip hop and funk. There are toe-tappers like ‘Song in my Head’ and genre-bending tilts such as ‘The Laborious Toll’. Throughout the entire record, the listener is asked to examine our reality, stripped of optimism – but not devoid of hope.
Making Things in Interesting Times
The 2nd “side” is a more reflective look at living in our corporate state of confusion. The songs focus on characters, stories, and place, but are threaded through with personal messages of struggle. As always, just mouse’s music touches on diverse genres from Americana blues and country to classical and even heavy metal influences. The EP concludes with a haunting guitar arrangement and vocal performance of ‘Susanin’s aria’ from Glinka’s opera.
